John Avery Gere and Carrie Gordon Cubbedge Carson papers, 1881-1898.

This collection consists of six letter press copy books containing John Avery Gere Carson's letters, a personal account book, the scrapbook of Carrie Gordon Cubbedge Carson, and a scrapbook of needlework patterns. The letter books contain his personal letters to his family and business letters unrelated to the Carson Naval Stores Company. The letter book of 1886-1891 contains some letters pertaining to the Southern Travellers' Association, the DeSoto Investment Company, and stock and land transactions. Discussed in other volumes are the Society of Colonial Wars, drainage, and turpentine statistics.

John Avery Gere Carson (1856-1930), a native of Baltimore, Maryland, founded the Carson Naval Stores Company in 1898, having been associated with other naval stores firms in Savannah and Chatham County. He was the son of Sarah Frances and Carvill Hynson Carson. He was prominent in social and civic affairs in Savannah and Chatham County, Georgia, being twice an alderman and a member of a Chatham County Commission.
